Valuable information about waste paper
With regard to the quantity today waste paper is the most important material for the European paper industry. The increased environmental awareness helps to a considerable increase in recycling. This means on the other hand that more and more waste paper is recycled. Numerous technical developments are to be continually aimed at expanding the use of waste paper.
There are more than 40 sorts of waste paper. Basically these sorts are subdivided into mixed or unmixed materials. The pureness required for particular paper products is attained by doing the desired quality already during the registration. That is the case concerning waste paper coming from commerce, business or industry. Furthermore specific qualities that are necessary for production have to be produced by means of sorting. This is valid for the most part of waste paper quantities coming from the household. In this area more than half of the consolidated products are sorted and the packing, as well as other waste paper (e.g. newspapers and magazines) will be used separately. The remaining part of packing will be used together with the other waste paper in a mixed form.
Dark sorts of waste paper can only be used in order to produce packing papers and cardboards. In comparison producers of graphical papers (e.g. news-print) and hygienic papers (e.g. toilet paper) have to rely on light sorts of paper.
Traditionally packing papers and cardboards are in the first place concerned with the use of waste paper.
Although, the use of waste paper is technically limited every recycling stage leads to a wear, this means a change with regard to the physical characteristics caused on the basic of strength loss and with it a quality reduction concerning the fiber materials. The paper fibers are shorted and can't be bind together sufficiently. Therefore a component of fresh fibers is always necessary in order to produce new paper. On average it is possible to recycle the fibers six times before finally taken out of production (reject) together with dirty and wasted colours.
The technical recycling paper characteristics are with regard of strength, work, surface and durability comparable with papers made of primar fibers. But the optical characteristics of paper, as whiteness and purity, are not nearly as good as the technical ones. The printing result is limited.
Recycling processing systems have a pre-sorting at their disposal. In this process dirt and staples as well as pieces of glass and wood are removed. After this, the waste paper matter is undergo a cleaning in order to remove fine dirt as pieces of sand and synthetic materials as well from this process. The next step is that all systems are shredding (dissolving) the waste paper with the aid of recirculationed working water. In addition light sorts of waste paper which are used for the production of graphic and hygienic paper have to pass a process which is carried out in order to remove the paper from Deinkingrests. This chemical and mechanical cleaning is done with soap and sodium hydrate in order to remove the wasted colours.
Due to the utilization of waste paper instead of primar fibers made of wood (cellulose and mechanical pulping) new and necessary ecological advantages are turned out:
- In comparison to wood material, savings on electric energy for wood shredding
- In comparison to cellulose, savings on fresh water leading to a reduction in waste water
- In comparison to cellulose and wood material, reduces the volume that must be passed on to the available disposal channels (landfill sites, waste incineration).
The quality of the paper is also dependent on the sorting method used by households.
